A Vishu Sadya n some memories..:).!!

Hiii..Another Monday is here n a truly beautiful one here..It was dark since some time back n now its like a blanket of light thrown atop this sulking dull vista.I can see a deep shade of blue over there, the farthest point where my sight ends, still the light has perfectly seeped in through all the thick hedges n lush branches,n have made some intricate designs on my dusty balcony. The shine is not staying for more time. Its fluctuating like a stubborn kid who gives a rare naughty smile while sulking..:)

Thanks for all your sweet n brighten-up comments..Really got to know how much you guys like my chirpy posts n style of writing, which otherwise I think of as my usual bla-bla's.Thanks for the wishes as well n here I am back in full form, smiling n as you like me..:)..Most of you are in my orkut list n has wished me ,Thank you so much for that n for the e-cards you all sent me..I am touched..:) For the rest of 'em,the news is I crossed another year in my life yesterday..:)..Yeah..My b'day..:) So..all my depression was gone, when I was pampered with anything n everything..A big cute bunny cake,A coco n white diamond pendant ,a number of pretty springwear's ...My day was perfect..:) n I blasted my poor Kutt's wallet..:D..I mean..literally..though it was all his choice..I didn't make any feast,as Vishu is on doorstep,tomorrow..So just made a simple kheer/payasam ,n we went out n had food ..Friends from India called up to wish.. n it was all nice n good..Wish it was birthday everyday or atleast once a month..Haa...Then we would be seriously helping the economy here..lols..:D

I am really busy bee today,as its Vishu tomorrow.I was thinking of skipping a full-fledged Sadya n all, attributing to the absence of my better half at home, thus sparing me from the big painstaking process'..n then comes the good news that he's gonna take leave tomorrow n declared that we'd cook together..Isn't that great? So ,I have to make atleast a few of the dishes today itself,so that we dont mess up in Kitchen tomorrow..Plus I have to clean our pooja stand n prepare for Kani tomorrow.I was so down yesterday, when we couldnt get anything proper for the ocassion..Obviously no Kanikonna's(yellow flower used for Kani, state flower of Kerala),n we didn't ger Ila (banana leaf for Sadya) n no curry leaves..sobsss..:(..I mean how can anyone prepare sadya without curry leaves??They said its summer in CA,n hence the leaves are scarce everywhere.God..It was depressing..!!..But still, being the first Vishu after our marriage,we are planning to do the rituals with stuffs available right now..

..So today am not gonna post any new recipe..Just will link to all the Sadya recipes I have posted till hand..So that atleast some of you find it useful for tomorrow.I got many mails n comments from you all asking to post the Sadya details..So am here with them..:)..

I should have posted,(n was planning to)all of the sadya recipes before this ocassion. Then I could have linked it all here..hmm..nyways I'll explain in simple words about all other recipes,n will post it in detail later..:)

For all those who are not familiar with Vishu,Its the one of the most important n awaited festivals of Kerala. It marks the beginning of a new spring year..Tamilians also celebrate it as their New year,if I am not wrong..:P

Vishu is more precious for kids than even Onam, because they get this Kaineettam from elders on Vishu morning. It means some money, ideally it should be a silver 1 rupee coin, but we usually get more than that..:P..So you see..n the blissful Kani(the word means sight,a joyful view),which is arranged by mom ,the night before. On Vishu morning,Mom gets up n lights the lamp, wakes us up,closes our eyes n leads us to the pooja room, where Kani is set up.We open our eyes to the most blissful sight ever, where lord krishna's idol is all adorned with bright yellow Konna flowers and jasmine garlands, and all that symbolizes wealth n prosperity ie, a huge Kadai, with rice, big yellow cuccumber, fresh fruits,a mirror,Silk clothings, gold n silver coins n ornaments, some make up items like kumkum, kajol n anything that is pleasant n prosperous. There will be a cocnut half in the middle ,filled with oil and a thick wick lits inside it.
Here is a Vishu Kani I got from google..

For me,its one of the most beautiful sights ever..n when we were led to the room, the fragrance of flowers n the lit lamp would wake our hearts up n then we would open our slumbering eyes to the brightness n purity of the whole rich sight of Krishna n his adornments, which would fill our mind n heart with so much of joy n undeterred trust n love for the Almighty. Its said that the sight if see on on Vishu morning, will fill our lives with the same richness n joy all through out the year. After the Kani,we kids would go n take bath,n then would come up n stand ready to recieve the Kaineettams.Dad n Mom will give the kaineettam n then we all would happily sit for the brekfast. Then Mom, would get all busy with Sadya preparations ,n we kids would burst crackers, enjoy TV programs,n pray that some elders would drop to out home,so that we could get more Kaineettams..:D:D

I love Vishu more than Onam..We would burst crackers in evenings too, diffferent types,,Poothiri's..which sparkle n sizzle..Malapadakkam's..which makes boom bang noises n even Gundu's which burst like Bomb's..I still remember the rainy evenings on day before Vishu, when I would go hunting with my small umbrella, for kanikonna's..It would be mainly in our temple surroundings, where there are big Konna tree's..n the ground below will be a mattress of wet yellow..April rains brings down yellow Konna showers..:)

Oh..I can endlessly muse about Vishu..n I know its been long since I started..without further delay leme go to Sadya part..Are you all ready to indulge??For a typical full fledged Sadya ,there are 30+ dishes. So am not gonna tell all that..This is a simple, yet a full Sadya ..k?

Like for usual Sadya's..It all starts with hot white rice drizzled with ghee, poured over by a ladle of thick yellow Katti Parippu(dal) n pappadam..Here is the Parippu recipe(click on pic)

After that, you can either go for pulisseri or Sambar..I have a mampazha pulisseri down here n Sambar as well..For Sadya its usually simple Vellarikka Chena pulisseri with the Cucuumber used for Kani or Ethapazham pulisseri with Banana..Just sub any veggie with mango, that I have used here.

As side dishes ,on the other half of the Ila (banana leaf),you have a thoran.See the cheera thoran n beans thoran. You can use any veggie like cabbage, carrot in the same method.

Beans Thoran

Then mebe 2-3 tpes of pachadi's n kichadi's..Its the same ..veggies cooked in a cocnut-yogurt sauce n tempered..I have a Beetroot pachadi,a yummy Pineapple-Grapes Pachadi n a Thakkali pachadi..For Kichadi you can follow the same method with Okra's n you have a yummy Vendakka kichadi..:)

Thakkali Pachadi(Tomato Pachadi)

Now for the rest of them I have no links..But I promise I'll post it soon..:)

Another important entry for any Sadya is as Avial(A mix of veggies curry)..

Just cut carelessly all those veggies ie,cuccumber, carrot, drumsticks n all that n cook in water with salt n turmeric ,chilli powders. When they are cooked add ground coconut-cumin-shallot-green chilli pasteto a hole made in the center of the veggies..cover ,cook, mix and drizzle with curry leaves mashed in cococnut oil..Ready..!!

Then you need a koottu kari(Mixed curry)..

Just cook kidney beans n pumkin (you can use Arbi's n chick peas as well..Koottu kari namse says it..anything n eveything)with turmeric salt chilli powders..Mash it..Add the same ,above mentioned coconut paste, mix n cook for few minutes..meanwhile roast fresh grated coconut with some curry leaves ,shallots n red chilli powder to dark brown n throw it to the pan.Drizzle oil n curry leaves too..:)

For Olan..

Cook kidney beans n Ashgourd in second coconut milk with salt, slit chillies, n lil fresh crack pepper.Cook till soft.Pour some thick coconut milk over it.Add,oil and curry leaves..Creamy rich mellowed Olan is ready..:)

Dont foget to include on your Ila,a variety of pickles,Inji curry,Upperi(banana fritters),Sarkkara varratiyathu(Sweet banana snack),a small banana,a pic of salt n pappad .

After indulging in the whole array of yummy dishes with rice..people usually have a handful of spicy Moru(Butter milk) to digest it all n some Rasam as well..

Rasam in tomato's cut n cooked in watery mashed toor dal with some chilli ,pepper,n rasam powders..Hing n Fenugreek powder also sprinkled on top..When cooked, they are tempered..!!

Close the treat with a sweet note.a yummy Payasam..Ada/Semiya/payar/parippu ..anything..I have the good ole' semiya one here..!!

Burp..!!

..So..that pretty well makes a good Sadya..Hope I have been able to include all of the main ones..n the recipes are understandable..Shoot me with any doubts you have..just drop a line here..I'll post all the other dishes soon..:)

..Oh..am so hungry now..So I'll be up again on Wednesday..hopefully..You all..have a great Vishu n yum Sadya..:)

Hugs

My that was some real good info..Now I am really thankful that I have a north Indian hubby who has no idea about our feast so all I have to do is cook a sambhar plus two three side dishes throw in a pappadam or two and readymade pickle and he will be one happy guy who will be thinking he participated in a Vishu Sadya.

Am really glad to see you back the chatter box way otherwise it would be really dull to read a 2 min post of urs :) :) Congrats for emptying your kutts pocket as this is really a great trick wives learn the hard way and you did it even before ur first anniversary..

Ohh you better check here for that curry leaves
